Like a chicken being readied for the rotisserie, I am naked on a hard wooden table, my skin marinated in warm oil that has been laced with 46 herbs and medications. At regular intervals, two short but muscular Tamil men smite my back and shoulder with small bags of rice that have been immersed in boiled milk. The word "yoga" derives from the Sanskrit root yuj ("to yoke"); which is cognate to modern English "yoke". Both derive from the Proto- Indo-European root *yeug- meaning, "to join" or "unite"It is generally translated as "union of the individual atma (loosely translated to mean soul) with parmatma, the universal soul." This may be understood as union with the Divine by integration of body, mind, and spirit. Thus, in essence, one who attempts yoga may loosely be_ referred to as a yogi. Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is a system of medicine based on the healing power of nature. Naturopathy is a holistic system, meaning that naturopathic doctors strive to find the cause of disease by understanding the patient as a totality of body, mind, and spirit. Most Naturopathic Doctor use a wide variety of therapies and techniques (such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture). A growing number of hotels, spas and hospitals are luring travelers to some not-often-visited corners of India for a soothing and sometimes life-changing regimen of massage, meditation, herbal medication and yoga. It's all based on the teachings of the ancient sages who invented ayurvedic medicine three millenniums in the past.
